How to turn an idea into a marketable product or service.
70So You Have An Idea...
Maybe you're like me and you constantly have ideas that you've tossed around but never taken advantage of. Keep in mind: "ideas are a dime a dozen, but those who put them into action are priceless." If that doesn't motivate you, realize that time is ticking away while you are sitting back on an idea that isn't making you any money. Make it happen and be motivated. Here's how to take action.
First Off..
Write down all of your ideas. Type them out so you have everything documented.
Write a two or three page synopsis of your business plan that you can share between your possible business partner, or just for your records as a culmination of your thoughts.
Now you must list all of the possible snags in the plan so you can decide how to work around them. List everything that may be a hindrance to your success - legalities, time issues, money issues etc. You should also write down every cost in your business plan. Then total up and see if this is actually plausible for you at this time. In addition, make sure the project is going to be profitable for you and has the backbone to provide success. Do RESEARCH!
With regards to the success of the service, I would suggest trying to fill a niche. If your product is completely original (or you can do it better) and necessary to a mass amount of people, it is likely that you can make a lot of money.
The next step is to create a full plan of action and business plan. What is the next step? Write down your plan for success and follow it. What is it going to take to make the business successful? Now that you know, make it happen and procure the necessary resources. If you need to make an investment, take into account your bank account, risk and necessity.
Of course this i just an overview of starting a business plan - you will likely need to do some research of your own to create a successful plan (talk to your peers and colleagues and anyone you know who is running a successful business and watch how they set it up).
If The Time Is Right:
Follow your business plan and adapt yourself to watch for strangleholds. Don't lose hope but don't go all in without leaving yourself an out in situations of bad planning. Planning is key!
Create a Website:
The best way to market yourself and your product is to formulate a website. Be mindful of the look of your product and service and how you want to market it - this should take precedence in the design and color scheme of your site. You may even be able to sell your product on the site - if not you can share what your service does and convince potential buyers to give you money. If you are not an adept web designer, find one that you can afford. My suggestion:
www.mocapoke.com
www.genius4rent.com
Let's Make Some Money:
Take some risks and start your business. You may be surprised with the results. If you need some extra cash to get going, try to get someone to invest in you or start your website and gain money but advertising and gaining traffic.
If you have anymore questions, let me know. Help each other out, talk to a friend and above all else good luck!

I've always wanted to stop working full time and just start a business, but I'm lacking the confidence to take the step. It is a big financial risk if i do. *sigh*...
You could argue that working for someone else is more risky since your job is in their hands. If you do it yourself, it is yours.
I agree that writing it all down is essential. Thinking it all the way through. I do have another question. What if you have an idea for a marketable product (one that doesn't exist) How would one decide where to go to get a prototype made? Maybe I should make this question a request...hmmm
This Hub makes me think there are a lot of good things to pick your brain about...
Thank you for writing it.

I invented this product years ago and have used it ever since. It is a Pet food dish holder that is 100% ANT proof and needs no maint. I have photos and an excellent working model. This one is made of wood and I think it could be made out of Moulded Plastic and would sell for less money. Would you like to see the photos? Thank you. Chet
